Described as “wedded to the granite of Cape Ann” by one of her art students, Erma Wheeler was particularly drawn to the sharp lines and reflective waters of the deep, cool quarries of Dogtown in Gloucester and Rockport.

Wet Basalt at Dawn, Lighthouse Beach
Wheeler’s “Basalt Series” was inspired by the wet rocks of Lighthouse Beach, and described by an art reviewer for the Boston Globe as “glistening like ‘black’ opals that sparkle with glints of greens, reds, and blues.”
