Starboats, 1923
A competitive sailor, Max Kuehne was also one of Cape Ann’s major marine painters. This work depicts the artist

At Rest, Monhegan Harbor

He often sketched and painted from a small dory in the water, capturing a low perspective and intimacy with his beloved subjects.
Fisherman at Harbor
Gordon Grant’s formative relationship with the ocean began at the age of 13, when he spent over four months at sea travelling from San Francisco to Scotland for his education. Most famous for his maritime subjects, Grant is able to combine a strong sense of light and mood with admirably accurate details of ship rigging and construction. His painting of the USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides,” is part of the White House collection and has hung in the Oval Office.
Dockside
One of the few native-born Cape Ann artists, the fascinating, eccentric, and gifted William Lester Stevens was born in Rockport to a family of ten children with little means. Notably focused and prolific, it is said that he won more awards and prizes than any other artist of his era (which included many American greats). His dedication to making art more accessible to the common man led to his contributions as a founder of the Rockport Art Association.
