At the turn of the twentieth century, artists drawn to Cape Ann were inspired by American Impressionists to employ plein air techniques and cast off more traditional palettes. Offering beautiful harbors, sailing vessels, and atmospheric clarity, Cape Ann beckoned artists seeking a community culture nurturing their individual artistic experimentation. This tradition of painting – this practice – became known as the Cape Ann School, influential enough to inspire an entire generation of painters ahead.
