The North Gloucester Perspective: Four Villages Embraced by Cape Ann Masters

From the rotary to Rockport, North Gloucester villages of Riverdale, Annisquam, Bayview and Lanesville contributed remarkable artwork and innovations to the Cape Ann artistic legacy, equal in impact to iconic Cape Ann School harborside scenes. Mid-20th century art from North Gloucester captured a deep sense of place and introspection, celebrating simplicities of daily life and confidence in experimentation. In that spirit, CAPE ANN COLLECTORS’ three gallery rooms of 54 master works invite unhurried contemplation inspired by original etchings, lithographs, block prints, watercolors and oils. CAC’s North Gloucester perspective is framed by pieces from The Folly Cove Designers and includes work by George Harvey, Max Kuehne, Hayley Lever, Charles Movalli, Stephen Maxfield Parrish, Stow Wengenroth, and Erma Wheeler.

  • A competitive sailor, Max Kuehne was also one of Cape Ann’s major marine painters. This work depicts the artist and his brother sailing a starboat in a strong breeze, most likely off the coast of Rockport. The frame is believed to be a custom period frame, hand-carved and painted by the artist.
