The Dory as Muse: Ethos and Essence

CAPE ANN COLLECTORS, 474 Washington Street, Gloucester, celebrates early summer with our new show, “The Dory as Muse: Ethos and Essence,” opening Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, 2 – 6 p.m. and running through June. Rowed, sailed or engine-driven, the dory – encompassing the seine boat – embodies the drama of an open boat, the tension in a tightened forearm, and the sound of a wooden vessel slipping through refracted water.

Often depicted as laborious and dangerous, or romanticized and colorful, this flat- bottomed, rakish lapstrake vessel carries the spirit, strength and aspirations of New England fishing communities. CAPE ANN COLLECTORS’ masters Theresa Bernstein, Gordon Grant, Hayley Lever, William Meyerowitz, Morris Hall Pancoast, Stephen Maxfield Parrish, William Lester Stevens and Don Stone (embedded in our 54-piece collection) embrace this muse through expressive contours, variations of function and essential teamwork.
